Anyone who has seen a lotus flower emerging from a murky pond cannot fail to observe the beauty of this exquisite plant - always looking so clean and pure against the dirty background. In Sanskrit the lotus is called "Padma" and is held to be a flower with a thousand petals. In Hinduism it is associated in particular with Brahma, the god of potency and Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. Its unfolding petals suggest the expansion of the soul. The growth of its pure beauty from the mud of its origin holds a benign spiritual promise. In Buddhism, the lotus is symbolic of purity of the body, speech and mind. It is also symbolic of detachment as drops of water easily slide off its petals. The ancient Egyptians thought of it as a symbol of rebirth because of the belief that it retracted into the water at night only to emerge fresh in the sun the next day. The lotus flower is thus symbolic of beauty, fertility, prosperity, spirituality and eternity.
